Zanzibar is located in the Indian Ocean, 35 kilometers off the coast of East Central Africa. Its capital is Zanzibar City. In 1964, it joined Tanzania along with Pemba Island and several smaller islands. Zanzibar covers an area of 2,461 square kilometers, making it the second-largest island in Africa after Madagascar. Its strategic location made it susceptible to colonization and a target for several colonial powers seeking to dominate the shipping routes along the East African coast. Zanzibar served as a key commercial center for over a thousand years.
The city of Stone Town (the “Stone City”) is one of the oldest residential areas on the island, with a population of around 900,000. The majority of the island’s population speaks Swahili, and scholars and recent arrivals from the Arabian Peninsula speak Arabic.
